Soap Batch Yield and a Wholesale Quote: A Worked Example

SellerToolkit TeamPublished Updated 4 min read

Follow usable bars through unit cost and an order price with setup, delivery and an entered fee.

Count the bars you can sell

These invented currency-unit costs illustrate arithmetic, not supplier prices or recommended margins. This is not a formulation or safety guide. Ingredients cost 480, labour 240 and batch overhead 80: included batch cost is 800. With 20 usable bars, batch cost per bar is 40. Add a separately entered wrapper and label costing 5 to reach 45 per bar.

When usable yield changes

If the same batch produces 16 usable bars, batch cost per bar is 800 / 16 = 50. Add the separate packaging cost of 5 to reach 55. Planned output and wet batch weight are not substitutes for usable finished output. Do not deduct the same curing loss twice.

A 40-bar order

Use the 20-bar yield scenario and included unit cost of 45. Forty bars cost 1,800. Setup adds 100 and seller-paid delivery adds 150, bringing order costs to 2,050. Assume zero tax, no discount, no buyer delivery charge, no fixed payment fee, and a 3% selling fee on item revenue. A 40% target margin leaves 1 − 0.40 − 0.03 = 0.57 for costs.

Required item revenue is 2,050 / 0.57 = 3,596.491228. Divide by 40 bars to get 89.912281 per bar. Round upward to two decimals: 89.92 each gives 3,596.80 revenue. A single fee rounded to cents is 107.90. Included profit is 3,596.80 − 2,050 − 107.90 = 1,438.90, approximately 40.01% of revenue.

Review the final quote

A discount reduces revenue and may miss the target. Extra delivery costs, a fixed fee or a different fee basis also change the calculation. Recalculate with your actual assumptions. The buyer’s resale margin is separate from yours.

Compare the estimate with production

Keep the issued quote and record actual material consumption, labour and usable output later. Included order profit is not company net profit and does not verify bank receipts.
